FAQ's

If I upload my on-premises Windows Server image to Windows Azure, do I need to provide my license keys?

No. Microsoft provides the Windows Server license keys for any running instances.

If I download my Windows Server image running on Windows Azure to on-premises, is the license provided in Windows Azure transferrable to on-premises?

No. If you download your Windows Server image running on Windows Azure to on-premises, you will then be required to supply a license for the image.

Do I need to purchase local disk storage with Virtual Machines separately?

No, local disk storage is provided with Virtual Machines and is not charged separately. To explore virtual machines configurations visit here.

Does the virtual machine instance price include Storage cost associated with the image running in the virtual machine?

The virtual machine instance price does not include any Storage cost associated with the image running in the virtual machines.

If my VM was deployed for less than an hour, how much do I get billed for?

Similar to Cloud Services, Virtual Machines are billed based on the number of clock hours your service was deployed. Any partial clock hour is billed as a full hour if the deployment was longer than five minutes within one clock hour. If your virtual machine was deployed for less than an hour, you may get billed for zero, one or two hours depending on when the deployment happened. For example, if you deploy a small virtual machine instance at 10:50 AM and delete it at 11:10AM, you will be billed for two hours, one hour for usage during 10:50 AM to 11:00 AM and another hour for usage during 11:00 AM and 11:10 AM.

How do various instance sizes get billed?

Similar to Cloud Services, for Virtual Machines Standard Instances, all hours are converted into small instance hours when presented on your bill, as outlined in the following table.

Windows

VIRTUAL MACHINE INSTANCE SIZECLOCK HOURSSMALL INSTANCE HOURS
Extra Small (A0) 1 1/4 hour
Small (A1) 1 1 hour
Medium (A2) 1 2 hours
Large (A3) 1 4 hours
Extra Large (A5) 1 8 hours

Non-Windows

VIRTUAL MACHINE INSTANCE SIZECLOCK HOURSSMALL INSTANCE HOURS
Extra Small (A0) 1 1/3 hour
Small (A1) 1 1 hour
Medium (A2) 1 2 hours
Large (A3) 1 4 hours
Extra Large (A4) 1 8 hours

Memory Intensive Instances are charged exactly the same as shown in the Pricing section above.

When would I use Windows Azure SQL database vs SQL Server in virtual machines?

If you have existing applications or workloads you simply want to grab and move to the cloud, SQL Server in a Virtual Machine is the easiest path to realize the benefits of the cloud. If you are looking to innovate and build new relational applications running in the cloud or extend parts of on-premises applications into the cloud, SQL Database is the best long-term solution. With SQL Database and SQL Server in a virtual machine, the common tools and technology allow developers to move applications on-premises or back to the cloud as business needs change or evolve.

What are the advantages of SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition over SQL Server 2012 Web Edition?

SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition gives you several advantages over the SQL server 2012 Web edition. For example, Standard Edition lets you run the powerful SQL Server Analysis Services, and allows for High Availability scenarios such as Failover Clustering and Database mirroring and backup compression. This article has more comprehensive details.

What are the advantages of SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition over SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition?

SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition offers several advantages for key features such as the Database Engine, Analysis Services and Reporting Services. Furthermore, Enterprise Edition allows for High Availability and Disaster Recovery (HADR) scenarios as well. Feature differentiation is discussed in detail in this article.
